April 22, 2015 – To support the long-term development of the University of Macau (“UM”) and to actively collaborate with the Macau SAR Government on its policy on talent cultivation, LCW Management Limited donated MOP30 million to the University of Macau Development Foundation in 2010. The donation is to support student activities and those with financial needs in UM’s residential colleges, which will help to groom outstanding professionals for the local community through the implementation of wholeperson education. In recognition of the generosity of the donor, UM has named a residential college on the campus as Lui Che Woo College and recently held an appreciation plaque unveiling ceremony for Lui Che Woo College at the University of Macau.
The “Appreciation Plaque Unveiling Ceremony of Lui Che Woo College, University of Macau” was held on Wednesday at the Hall of Lui Che Woo College and was officiated by Dr. Lui Che Woo, Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group (“GEG”) and Mrs. Lui Che Woo; Dr. Lam Kam Seng, Chair of UM’s University Council; and Prof. Wei Zhao, Rector of UM. Other honorable guests witnessing this significant moment included Mr. Hung Bo, Division Chief at the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau; Ms. Luisa Kuok, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau; Dr. Jose Manuel Bento Ferreira de Almeida, Acting Deputy Director of Tertiary Education Services Office; Mr. Francis Lui, Vice Chairman of GEG; Dr. Tse Chi Wai, Chair of the Executive Committee of the UM Development Foundation; Prof. Haydn Chen, Vice Rector (Student Affairs) of UM; Prof. Liu Chung Laung, Founding Master of Lui Che Woo College of UM; and Prof. Yip Ming Chuen, Master Designate of Lui Che Woo College of UM.
Prof. Wei Zhao, Rector of UM, thanked LCW Management Limited for its generous donation to support UM in the development of its residential colleges so that students can have a better campus life and achieve well-rounded development. He praised Lui Che Woo, saying that he not only has created world-class wealth, but has dedicated his whole life to advancing public welfare. A firm believer in “what is taken from the community is to be used for the good of the community” and guided by a strong sense of social responsibility, Dr. Lui has been actively involved in medical, education, real estate, hospitality, and entertainment industries over the past decade and has served in various positions in the public sector. Rector Wei Zhao said Dr. Lui has set a sterling example for today’s young people by his outstanding achievements and contributions to society.
Dr. Lui Che Woo, Chairman of GEG, remarked he was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to make contributions to higher education in Macau. “As Macau is striving for economic diversification, demand for all types of professionals will gradually increase. In view of this, the SAR government has established a long-term mechanism for cultivating talent and has proposed relevant policies, including the set-up of the Talent Development Committee as well as the formulation and implementation of long-term strategies. I will make my best efforts to promote talent cultivation in Macau,” he said.
Furthermore, Dr. Lui Che Woo hailed the contributions of UM in talent cultivation. “As the cradle of cultivating professionals, the University of Macau takes up the responsibilities of grooming talent for Macau. It has pushed forward education reform in recent years, and has formulated a new “4-in-1” pedagogical model to enhance the quality of education that has achieved remarkable outcomes,” he said.
In appreciation of his care and support for the students, Dr. Lui Che Woo was presented a souvenir by Prof. Wei Zhao and flowers by a representative of UM students. Afterwards, all the officiating guests hosted a ceremony to unveil the Appreciation Plaque and dotted the eyes of the lions in the lion dance; which symbolizes that Lui Che Woo College has laid a solid foundation for talent cultivation in Macau.
Complementing the residential college-based system of “cultivating people” and the faculty-based system of “imparting knowledge”, Lui Che Woo College currently has 430 students. Students from different majors and in different years of study live together in the college and take part in various competitions and recreational activities, thereby attaining good interpersonal skills. Through peer interaction and encouragement, students can also acquire self-discipline and attain self-growth, succeeding in the wellrounded development. Moreover, the college does not only provide a lively environment for students, but also enables them to form friendships that will become great assets for their future development and career.
As a patriotic and Chinese-owned enterprise, GEG is not only committed to its business operation, but is also greatly concerned with local education development. In the past years it has collaborated with different educational and vocational institutions in organizing a wide range of events, including “GEG Macau Cup – Teenage National Conditions Knowledge Competition”, for seven consecutive years, and “GEG Youth Achievement Program”, for four consecutive years. The various events aim to help Macau youths to establishing a set of correct values, and to strengthen their sense of belonging and identification with the motherland.
