Welcome lunch for the Chinese Film Delegation
March 27, 2009
Mr. Francis Lui, Vice Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group ("GEG"), indicated at a welcome lunch party for the Chinese Film Delegation that in order to develop Macau into a world-class tourism and leisure centre, Macau should support the development of related industries on top of the foundation laid down by the gaming industry. These include developing and promoting the local culture.
Mr. Lui and Mr. Li Qian Kuan, Chairman of the China Film Association and China Film Foundation, are both Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Committee Members. They interacted with each other during the lunch. Mr. Lui said, "I fully support the Central Government's proposed measures in its Outline of the Plan for Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta, in officially positioning Macau as a World-Class Tourism and Leisure Centre. In addition, I also agree that Macau needs to diversify its development. Due to its limited land size and human capital, which is unable to meet market demands objectively, it is difficult for Macau to achieve horizontal development in the short-term. However, diversification will align more closely with Macau's strengths and limitations. Building on its strong gaming and entertainment industry, Macau can explore closely related industries, and develop and expand its cultural entertainment. I believe that developing and expanding Macau's cultural industry, including the local film industry, will add new tourism elements and characteristics to Macau, thus attracting more international tourists. I hope that people in the Mainland film industry will pay more attention to Macau's new developments."
Mr. Li expressed, "The Chinese Outstanding Film Festival in Macau has attracted increasing importance and support in recent years. I hope that different stakeholders will fully support the Macau film culture development."
Besides Mr. Li Qian Kuan, the attendees of GEG's welcome luncheon also included: Mr. Xue Guizhi, Executive President of the China Film Foundation; Mr. Zhai Junjie and Mr. Cui Junyan, Vice Presidents of the China Film Foundation; Mr. Yu Yang and Mrs. Yang Jing, famous performing artists; Mr. Zhang Jian Ya, Chairman of the Shanghai Film Association; Mr. Feng Yuan Zheng, Mrs. Liang Dan Ni and Ms. Miao Pu, movie stars; and Mr. Yang Yuan, Director for Administrative Office, Film Bureau, State Administration of Radio, Film & TV of the People's Republic of China.
Mr. Zhang Xiaoguang, Assistant Director-General of the Department of Culture and Education, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macau also attended the welcome lunch. During the lunch, he expressed his hope for greater collaboration and cultural exchanges between Macau and Mainland so that Macau can truly achieve its diversification objective.
