November 19, 2019 – To support Macau’s development as a liveable green city and top tourism destination, Galaxy Entertainment Group (“GEG”) has implemented a number of measures to promote and enhance team members’ awareness of energy conservation, aligning with the environmental policies and philosophy of the Macau SAR Government. This year, GEG organized the annual Energy and Environmental Conservation Week (“EEC Week”) for the fourth consecutive year, and invited representatives of United Nations University (“UNU”) to deliver a talk on the Sustainable Development Goals. Together with a series of engaging themed activities held at the back-of-house area of Galaxy Macau™, including “Sustainable Food Day”, “Donation Day for Toys and Books”, “Green Shopping Experience”, and “Green Workshop”, EEC Week encourages team members to incorporate the eco-friendly spirit and practices into their daily life.
Officiating at the opening of the five-day EEC Week earlier were Dr. Ignacio Marcovecchio, Project Manager of UNU; Mr. Chee Pong Chan, Senior Vice President of Facilities Management of Galaxy Macau; Mr. Vivas Lo, Vice President of Engineering of Galaxy Macau; and Mr. Justin Ng, Assistant Vice President of Sustainability Life Cycle Management of Galaxy Macau. Highlight of this year’s event was the Sustainability Talk, which was hosted by Dr. Huang Jingbo, Director of the UNU Institute in Macau, and Dr. Marcovecchio. The two UNU representatives introduced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to over 200 GEG team members and discussed their experience and insights about working in the environmental protection segment. This consolidated the team members’ understanding of their environmental responsibilities and enlightened them about the concept and significance of the joint efforts of mankind to achieve sustainable development.
Dr. Huang said, “UNU is the only UN organization in Macau. It is our pleasure to be invited by GEG to deliver this Sustainability Talk. GEG is the first corporation in Macau to invite us to give a talk on sustainability. Its efforts to implement and promote environmental protection and sustainability not only demonstrate its corporate responsibility; they also assist the community in promoting the sustainable development of the planet.”
Dr. Marcovecchio said, “We are very happy to see the GEG team members’ interest in sustainability, shown by the full house for the talk. GEG’s vision in implementing and promoting sustainable development has a positive impact on the field.”
EEC Week encourages team members to incorporate green initiatives into their daily life. “Sustainable Food Day” was held in staff canteens to give team members a taste of multiple organic dishes. Together with the “Let’s Go Green” vegetarian activity held in the canteens every Monday, the team members had a wide range of vegetarian dining options, from vegetables and fruits to plant-based meat, allowing them to have first-hand experience with the diversity of green dining and strengthening their knowledge of the benefits of green dining for personal health and the environment. As part of the “Green Shopping Experience”, a number of local small and medium-sized enterprises that sell mainly eco-friendly products were invited to set up stalls in the back-of-house area for team members to shop for their needs, thus promoting a green lifestyle. “Donation Day for Toys and Books” encouraged team members to give new life to old items, with all the toys and books collected donated to Caritas Macau. Finally, there were four Green Workshop sessions, which attracted the enthusiastic participation of team members, who learned how to make eco-friendly wraps to reduce plastic use.
GEG has long been committed to assisting the Macau SAR Government in achieving its vision of creating a low-carbon green lifestyle in Macau. While developing its business, GEG pays attention to eco-friendly concepts and actively participates in green initiatives, as part of its corporate social responsibility. GEG also educates and encourages team members to participate in environmental protection efforts through an array of activities, including the Sustainability Awards, in which team members can submit energy conservation proposals to GEG, and a prize quiz about sustainability. GEG will continue to advocate environmental protection ideas among team members to help develop a green society and achieve the sustainable development goals.
